Sector: Affordable housing
Building: New build residential
Products: Powerstock glass lined calorifier, Merley boiler sequence controller
Application: Space heating 540kW and domestic hot water

Ecogale Services Ltd, the M&E contractors for the project, chose Hamworthy Heating’s products because they provide a space saving solution whilst significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint.

The solar collectors were installed by Natural Power Wales and their technical director Lloyd Reed commented:

“I’m confident that Plaistow has made the right choice for its heating and hot water system.”
“Being environmentally green is a big issue for councils now, and the choice of Hamworthy’s solar hot water system for this site will certainly back that up.”

Solar energy is absorbed using the high efficiency solar collectors and solar arrays are used to provide pre-heated feed water via six Hamworthy Powerstock PS 1000 twin coil calorifiers. The solar collectors are complemented by three Purewell VariHeat 180kW gas fired condensing boilers, including a boiler sequencing cascade controller, to supply heating and top up for the hot water to meet peak demand.

Purewell VariHeat condensing boilers achieve European Class 5 performance for low NOx and exceed Building Regulations requirements, with efficiencies up to 108% nett.

Operating as a fully pumped system, risers from the basement plant room supply heat via branches at each level, each connecting a number of apartments via an hydraulic interface unit in each dwelling. This acts in a similar way to a combination boiler but without the gas, managing hot water and heat as required, reducing significantly the energy input.  This contributes to the carbon reduction commitment with the added benefit of providing individual billing for residents.

The complete system exemplifies Hamworthy’s ability to optimise design, based on the requirements of an individual project. It will ensure that Nebula Court’s heating and hot water requirements are as up-to-date and environmentally friendly as possible.
